Training and Development Officer, Workforce Development
Alan is responsible for designing and delivering high quality continuous professional development opportunities for national and local commissions to guide and empower the Scottish drug and alcohol workforce in supporting the recovery of people affected by drugs and alcohol.
Alan provides a specialism in the psychological intervention, Motivational Interviewing (MI), learned and developed in the USA and UK from some of the world’s foremost experts on the subject.
Trained by, and a registered member of, the international Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT), Alan is recognised internationally in training and coaching practitioners in this psychological intervention. Alan’s central interest in the practice development of MI to improve the quality and effectiveness of counselling strategies for motivating behaviour change in brief encounters led him to Yale University, USA. It was at Yale when Alan trained in the specialism of providing post training coaching in initiating the process of enhancing proficiency in Motivational Interviewing through the analysis and assessment of learners’ MI practice using an established, validated coding tool. Alan holds a BA in Community Learning and Development and a Post Graduate Certificate in Addictions from the University of Glasgow.
