Carole Hunter has recently retired as the Lead Pharmacist, Alcohol and Drug Services, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde where she was a member of the working groups developing Glasgow’s Supervised Drug Consumption Room (SDCR) and Heroin Assisted Treatment service. Carole obtained a pharmacy degree from Robert Gordon’s in Aberdeen in 1978. She has extensive experience in community pharmacy in Scotland and England and owned and managed a pharmacy for 10 years in the 1990s. During that time, she established one of Scotland’s early pharmacy needle exchanges. She has post graduate degrees from the Open and Stirling Universities.
In 2003 she succeeded Kay Roberts as Area Pharmacy Specialist in Drug Use for NHS Greater Glasgow. She has been a member of a number of national advisory bodies, served on the Dundee and Renfrewshire Drug Commissions and is a former chair of the National Naloxone Advisory Group. Dr Hunter was a member of the 2017 Drug Misuse and Dependence UK Guidelines on Clinical Management Independent Expert Working Group.
In 2019 she was appointed as a member of the UK Advisory Council on Misuse of Drugs (ACMD) and in 2020 was designated as a Fellow of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society.
