SDF Bids Farewell to Long-Serving Head of Policy, Practice & Communications

After nearly two decades at Scottish Drugs Forum, Austin Smith, our Head of Policy, Practice and Communications, has retired – leaving behind an extraordinary legacy of influence, leadership and change.

For almost 20 years, Austin has been at the heart of the organisation’s efforts to ensure drugs policy in Scotland is evidence-based, compassionate, and informed by the voices of people with lived and living experience. From shaping national policy responses to challenging stigma and injustice through thoughtful communications, Austin has made an immeasurable contribution to both SDF and the wider field.

Known for his dry wit, sharp analysis, and unwavering commitment to human rights, Austin has steered the organisation’s message and mission through periods of change, challenge, and, most recently, national crisis.

To mark this significant milestone, Austin joined our CEO for a special episode of SDF’s Drugs Uncut podcast to reflect on his time in post – from how the landscape has changed, to what still needs to happen, and what has kept him going through it all. It’s a conversation full of insight and honesty.

Listen to the podcast here.

Everyone at SDF wishes Austin the very best for a well-earned retirement and extends our heartfelt thanks for the dedication, leadership, and humanity brought to the role over so many years.
