Re-Solv: Nitrous Oxide Survey and Free Training

SDF’s Workforce Development Programme Manager, Adelle Still, recently met with Diane Thomson from Re-Solv to discuss emerging trends in volatile substance use and explore the charity’s work to increase awareness and provide training across Scotland. In this blog, Adelle shares some key insights from the discussion, including a new survey on nitrous oxide use and details of Re-Solv’s free training opportunities.

I recently met with Diane Thomson from Re-Solv to learn more about the charity’s work across Scotland and discuss some emerging trends in volatile substance use.

One area Diane highlighted was a new snapshot survey looking at awareness and use of nitrous oxide (laughing gas) among 16–25-year-olds. While nitrous oxide has legitimate uses in healthcare and catering, there are increasing concerns about recreational use and the harms associated with it, including burns, injuries and, in some cases, serious nerve damage. Re-Solv hopes to gather responses from 300 young people across Scotland between May and September 2026 to help build a clearer picture of current knowledge and use. The survey is anonymous, and no personal information or participating organisations will be identified. Here is the link – Anonymous Survey – Fill in form

We also discussed Re-Solv’s free Volatile Substance Use Training, funded by the Corra Foundation. The training is designed for anyone who wants to improve their understanding of gas and solvent use, particularly those working with young people and vulnerable groups, including youth workers, addiction workers, housing support staff, recovery groups, teachers, parents and carers.

Topics covered include:

  • Current trends in gas and solvent use
  • Commonly used products, including nitrous oxide, aerosols and solvents
  • Risks and harms associated with use
  • Mortality trends and emerging issues
  • Harm reduction messages
  • Supply-side legislation

It was great to hear about the work Re-Solv is doing to increase awareness of a substance group that can often be overlooked. Their training offers an excellent opportunity for professionals to build their knowledge and confidence in responding to gas and solvent use.
